       QUICK FACT FRIDAY
King Charles II grants a Charter for the Colony of Carolina

Sunday, March 24, marks the 356th anniversary of the grant by King Charles II of a charter for the colony of Carolina to the eight Lords Proprietors. These men were beneficiaries of the "Restoration" of the Stuart monarchy in England in 1661.

The English Civil War resulted in the execution of King Charles the First in 1649, the establishment of an English Commonwealth and then a Protectorate under Oliver Cromwell and, briefly, his son, Richard. The political crisis that followed the death of the elder Cromwell and the inability of the younger to maintain power, led Parliament to invite the return of Charles II -- son of the beheaded Charles I -- to the throne.

QUICK FACT FRIDAY

Mount Pleasant in the Siege of Charleston - February through May 1780

In February of 1780, a British force of over 12,000 landed near the Edisto and marched over Wadmalaw, Johns and James Island to attack Charlestown. By April, they had moved up the western bank of the Ashley River, crossed at Magnolia plantation, and marched down Charlestown Neck to cut off the land approaches to the besieged Americans in the city. Before this invasion, in order to defend the harbor and also to ensure lines of communication and supply to the north, the Americans had built fortifications East of the Copper. The largest of these was Lempiere's Point Battery. Lempriere's Point was located at the mouth of the Wando River just below Hobcaw Point. The property was part of a plantation owned by Captain Clement Lempriere and was the location of Lempriere's Ferry, offering daily runs to and from Charlestown.
