                         QUICK FACT FRIDAY
The British as Early Settlers
This week's Quick Fact Friday continues the monthly theme of The British in Mount Pleasant with a look at their early settlement of the area.
In the early 1600s, pioneers sailed from England to South Carolina looking for new opportunities. There were approximately nineteen different Native American tribes on the South Carolina coast. The dominant Native American tribes in our area, designated by the South Carolina legislature as Christ Church Parish, were the Sewee and Wandoes.

Arrival of the British in the 1600s
November's theme is The British in Mount Pleasant. This week's Quick Fact Friday takes us back to when the British first came to the region.
In March 1663, King Charles of England wrote letters granting eight proprietors a province to be named Carolina. These proprietors were named Earl of Clarendon, Lord Craven, Duke of Albemarle, Lord Berkeley, Lord Ashley, Sir George Carteret, Sir William Berkeley, and Sir John Colleton.

Old Village Tour
Today's Quick Fact Friday continues October's theme of Historical Walking Tours of Mount Pleasant and features the "Old Village Tour".
By 1872, several settlements which had developed along Charleston Harbor had incorporated into the Town of Mount Pleasant. The earliest hamlet was Greenwich Village (1766), followed by the Hibben Ferry Tract (1770), Mount Pleasant Plantation (1808), Hilliardsville (1847), and Lucasville (1853). The Old Village was bounded by Shem Creek, Simmons Street, Cove Inlet and the Harbor.

Mount Pleasant Recreation Department
For the month of August, the Historical Commission has been featuring recreation, parks and gardens from Mount Pleasant's past. We conclude this theme today with a look at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department.
It was noted in the History of Mount Pleasant South Carolina by Petrona Royall McIver, first published in 1960, that the Town had obtained a Recreation Director and two assistants. From traditional recreational activities, such as sports and fitness, to cultural events, therapeutic recreation and senior programs, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department has played an important role in the quality of life and strong sense of community that Town residents enjoy.
