                         Quick Fact Friday
Seabreeze Drive-In
The Seabreeze Drive-In movie theater opened in Mount Pleasant in 1951, advertising itself as “1 1/2 miles beyond Cooper River Bridge, Mt. Pleasant near Shem Creek at the Dairy Queen.” For 40 cents admission, the theater played some of the most popular 1950s films, including Sabrina in 1956, and Funny Face in 1957. When the 1956 film Untamed Mistress, about a woman kidnapped by a tribe of bloodthirsty gorillas, was shown at the Seabreeze in January of that year, manager Paul A. Foster was arrested on obscenity charges that were ultimately dismissed.
The theater was acquired by new owners in 1957 and rebranded as the Azalea Auto Theatre, which closed later the same year. The site was abandoned by 1959, and in 1962 the projection booth and concession stand were completely destroyed by a fire. Today the location of the old theater is a shopping center off of Coleman Boulevard, across from the Coleman Public House.
