Quick Fact Friday 2018.12.28
Posted on Dec 28th, 2018

Patjens Post Office has been owned and maintained by the Alhambra Garden Club since 1971. In 2001, the club undertook a complete restoration of the building and held a celebration with remaining members of the Patjens family and local dignitaries in attendance. A commemorative postcard was also offered. Since then, the club has worked hard to raise awareness of the building and its significance as well as funds to continue to maintain it. It has published a book with images of Patjens and the Old Village, held fundraisers, produced a DVD of a 1990's interview/film of Wilfred Tiencken whose mother was a Patjens, arranged for the annual Children's Fourth of July Parade to start and end at the post office, received children's "Letters to Santa" through the post office's mail slot, welcomed visits by student and special interest groups, and held plant sales there throughout the years.
The Alhambra Garden Club is this year's recipient of the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award, which recognizes an individual, group or organization for exceptional accomplishment in preserving the physical and/or cultural heritage of Mount Pleasant and is issued by the Town of Mount Pleasant Historical Commission. The club will receive an engraved medallion and a proclamation will be read at Town Council's meeting on February 12, 2019. We hope to see you there!
