QUICK FACT FRIDAY

Happy New Year History Fans!

Happy New Year, Mount Pleasant! We are so fortunate to be in a region that is rich in our country’s history from its earliest settlement through the trials, tribulations, and successes of the following decades. Whether you are a recent resident or have been here for generations, we have new and fun ways to live and learn the history of Mount Pleasant. A new year brings a fresh, optimistic start; we wanted to take a moment to look back on all we were able to accomplish this year even with the challenges created by COVID:

Mount Pleasant Stages of Development

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas, Mount Pleasant! Last week we commemorated the 184th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Mount Pleasant. Today’s Quick Fact Friday expands on the foundation of the Town by highlighting its stages of development. The earliest hamlet established was Greenwich Village in 1766. The Hibben Ferry Tract, bordering Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor, followed in 1770. Mount Pleasant Plantation, sandwiched between the Hibben Ferry Tract and Greenwich Village was established in 1808. The Old Village was bounded by Shem Creek, Simmons Street, Cove Inlet and the Harbor.

Hamlin Community

According to Hamlin historian Elizabeth Hamlin “Liz” McConnell, Hamlin Community was established in 1701, not long after Copahee Plantation was purchased in 1696 by one of her ancestors, Thomas Hamlin. The plantation originally encompassed approximately 1,200 acres of land. It was later divided into Copahee and Contentment Cottage with around 400 acres remaining today, known as Hamlin Farms and owned by McConnell’s brother, Osgood Darby Hamlin III. The area is now bisected by Rifle Range Road and Hamlin Road.

The Snowden Community and School House

As we continue on our exploration of the settlement communities within Mount Pleasant, our subject today is the Snowden Community and its historical gem, the Snowden School House. Although Snowden is an unincorporated portion of Charleston County, it is surrounded by the neighborhoods and commercial areas of Mount Pleasant. Snowden is located around the area north of Long Point Road including Egypt Road, Community Road, and Snowden Road. Snowden is one of the oldest Gullah-Geechee communities formed after The Civil War by freed slaves. Its close proximity to the Wando River allowed residents to shrimp, crab and fish both for profit and personal use. Additionally, the newly-freed residents of Snowden set up their own farms increasing the area’s agricultural renown for crops such as figs, peaches, blueberries, watermelons, and pecans.
